Last year we submitted an entry to a national competition run by the publishers Orion Books, entitled “Animals are not Rubbish”. The theme being endangered species. We made a Dodo – a now extinct animal with particular connection to Oxford – covered in bees – a creature facing extinction whose importance to the entire planetary eco-system cannot be overestimated (“If the bee disappears from the surface of the earth, man would have no more than four years to live”, Albert Einstein).

Our dodo travelled up to the Royal Geographical Society in London, won the competition judged by Virginia McKenna – founder of the Born Free Foundation, Lauren St John – author of children’s books with animal themes, and someone from Orion , and won for the school £500 worth of books.
